It was a very hectic yet fulfilling year for me during my incumbency as President of our Alumni Association. It was no easy task because our association had been known of accomplishing more and more as the years go by. The successes of the past administrations served only to put added pressure with the corresponding expectation for me to sustain such achievements.

But with the utmost cooperation and unwavering support of my powerhouse team of officers as well as those of the general membership, we did well and made our association proud of our accomplishments. To all of you, goes my most heartfelt appreciation with my resolute commitment to continuously support our alumni association.

Let me just reiterate that the Chong Hua Alumni, are the best evidence of the fulfilled dream of our school. Conversely, the continuous success of our school is the fulfilled dream of our alumni. MABUHAY ! CHONG HUA ALUMNI.

A Jolo-born entrepreneur/humanitarian recently joined the ranks of iconic women Hillary Clinton, Laura bush, Toni Morrison, Aung Sang Suu Kyi and Audrey Hepburn.

Rosalind L. Wee, a food ingredients formulator cum socioeconomic advocate, is the 2009 Pearl S. Buck International Women of the Year. Two years ago it was Bush. In 1999 Clinton, in 1997 Nobel Peace Prize awardee Suu Kyi of Burma, in 1994 Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winner for literature Morrison and in 1993 Audrey Hepburn.

Pearl S. Buck International president Janet L. Mintzer cited Wee for “an impressive turnaround of the Pearl S. Buck Philippine office under her leadership and her outstanding commitment to the education, health, and psychosocial development of Amerasian and displaced children.”

When notified about the international prestigious award Wee said, “It came as a total surprise and I am so honored to accept it for our country.”

In the Philippines, the Pearl S. Buck honor was presented to former Philippine president Corazon Aquino in 1995 and Amelia J. Gordon in 2002.

“I was so overwhelmed to find out that I am the third Filipino woman to received it,” said Wee who was embraced women and children advocacy in the Philippine for the past several years.

Named after Pearl S. Buck, the first women to receive Pulitzer and Nobel Prize for literature, the award was established 30 years ago to “honor women who have broken barriers with professional achievements and a strong history of humanitarian pursuits, particular to women and children.”

The awarding ceremony will be held in Perkasie, Pennsylvania in September.

To pursue her voluntary work for Pearl S. Buck foundation-Philippines for the past four years, Wee, trekked to diverse places like Ormoc, Angeles City, Madapdap, Cebu and Olongapo, visiting displaced kids and their families. She also joined the Pearl S. Buck conferences in Bangkok, Thailand, and Zhenjiang, China, where Pearl Buck lived for 40 years.

What’s more exemplary is that Wee pursued her altruistic endeavors in spite of visual obstacle, something she downplays. After a harrowing 14-hour surgery to remove a brain tumor, the size of a golf ball, lodged between optic nerves, Wee emerged legally blind, with no peripheral vision and just 25 percent vision in both eyes.

Rosalind Wee is married to Lee Hiong Wee of Zamboanga City. They have six children, three of whom are married, and blessed with 5 grand children. She is an alumna of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School Class ’63 and Sulu Tong Jin School.

Other non-profit organizations keep her socioeconomic calendar full. Wee is the president of the Philippine Federation of Local Councils of Women whose main thrust is to teach women at the grassroots level to pursue micro business to augment family income.

She also represents the NGO women sector at the TESDA Women’s Center National Gender and Development council headed by Dr. Leticia Ramos Shahani. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Bo Sanchez’s Shepherds’ Voice Radio and TV Foundation Inc. and treasurer of Philippine National Red Cross, Quezon City Chapter.

In 2005. She was part of the Philippine delegation to the 49th United Nations Commission Conference on the Status of Women held in New York.

Living life on a full plate, she plays golf with the Tagaytay Highlands Ladies and was the group’s past president.
